About Green Building

Building green is mostly about the process. If planned for and implemented during construction, the cost difference of a "green built" home is negligible. A few examples of the features that will give you the greatest return on little or no investment are: properly sealing the building envelope, sufficient insulation, proper size of the mechanical system, air recirculation and filtration, proper site preparation and location of structure, passive solar, rainwater collection, compact fluorescent bulbs, wood stoves, using materials that don’t have harmful chemicals and no voc paint. Before adding amenities that do cost a lot of money without as much return, focusing on efficiency is recommended.

All of our homes are Energy Star and Healthy Built Homes certified. Overseen by the Western North Carolina Green Building Council, this certification means our homes are monitored throughout the construction process to ensure: proper site preparation, building envelope sealing, above code insulation value, water conservation, heating and cooling efficiency, indoor air quality, low energy consumption, and sustainable material selection.

Homes with this certification are eligible for a 5% discount through Progress Energy, statistically have a higher resale value, and consume less energy resulting in lower utility bills for homeowners.
